Community Resources

These are community resources that have benefited different members of our ward at different stages of family life…including those times of a tight semester (or more):

Sub for Santa program at the United Way of Utah County

This is a marvelous community help and we can be involved as recipient families or those involved in donating.

Families that are interested as recipients should apply quickly as the cutoff is coming up! It is for families with children between 18 months and 14 years of age. http://www.unitedwayuc.org/subforsanta/applicants.htm

Families that are able to contribute by donating or sponsoring a family can too!

Utah Food Assistance and/or Medicaid State Health Insurance
The application for food assistance and Medicaid are combined in the same form. They use a scale that calculates your monthly income, family size and savings accounts. You may qualify for some, none or all of the services for a short window of time or a longer period. There are regular requalification forms sent every 3 months to determine eligibility. The following link is an online application for state assistance.

Those that qualify for food assistance receive a Utah Horizon card with monthly allotments that can be used to buy food at grocery stores. Maceys, Harmons, Reams, Sunflower Market, Target, Walmart, Smiths, Day's, and Albertsons all accept the Horizon card which is used like a debit card. The following link gives more description of how the program works including income level cut-offs:

WIC Women, Infants and Children

This is a group for pregnant women, nursing women and families with children under 5 years of age. They offer vouchers that can be redeemed at grocery stores for formula, milk, eggs, peanut butter, beans, cheese and cereal. They provide nutrition educational programs on breastfeeding, recipes and family nutrition. A person has regular visits to the clinic and is given the vouchers for free food at the appointments.

Volunteer Care Clinic of Provo
http://www.unitedwayucv.org/org/programs/3487650.html
Every Tuesday and Thursday evening in the County Health building there is a free health clinic. Many doctors and nurses in the community volunteer here to bring health services to people without insurance benefits. This is great if you get sick--they do not manage diseases. It is a first come first serve situation.

Freecycle.org of Provo
http://www.freecycle.org/group/US/Utah/Provo
This is a yahoo group that people post items that they would like to have or get rid of. The rules are no money involved, no trading and no business advertising. You can receive emails of what people have available or need or just get a "daily digest" that is a run down of what is on the list. It is a fun place to check.

Craigslist

http://provo.craigslist.org/ and http://saltlakecity.craigslist.org/
This is a community group that has a variety of resources. There is also a "free" section that is fun to check on. This is a great place to advertise text books for sale or ones that are wanted.

If you would like help navigating these options, please contact your RS Education Counselor, Sarah I. 8-6099
